Change of Address Checklist

Change of Address Checklist: Everyone You Need to Notify

Changing your address is not a single form. USPS forwarding helps redirect eligible mail, but it does not update the address held by your bank, driver’s license agency, insurer, employer, doctor, or subscription services. Use this checklist to update the organizations that matter, then keep forwarding in place while you catch anything missed.

Four Weeks Before the Move

Start with accounts that affect the move itself or need advance scheduling.

  • Tell your employer or payroll team the date your new address takes effect.
  • Arrange utility service for electricity, gas, water, trash, and internet.
  • Update renters or homeowners insurance for the correct property and date.
  • Ask schools, childcare providers, or pet-care providers what records they need.
  • Review recurring deliveries and subscriptions that might ship during the move.
  • Confirm address and access details with your moving company.

If you use a PO box, private mailbox, or mailroom, confirm how each sender should format the address. Save the exact preferred version so you do not introduce small inconsistencies across accounts.

Do not cancel essential service too early. Where possible, overlap utilities at the old and new homes for a day or two so a schedule change does not leave either property without service.

Two Weeks Before the Move

Submit an official change-of-address request through USPS. You can use the official Movers Guide website or submit PS Form 3575 at a Post Office. USPS allows requests up to 90 days before the effective date and recommends notifying mailers directly at least two weeks before moving.

Then update organizations that send sensitive or time-critical mail:

  • Banks, credit unions, credit-card issuers, and lenders
  • Investment, retirement, and payment accounts
  • Health, auto, life, renters, or homeowners insurance
  • Doctors, dentists, pharmacies, and veterinarians
  • Attorneys, accountants, and other professional advisers
  • Federal, state, and local benefit programs

Use the provider’s official app or website rather than a link from an unexpected message.

Government Address Changes

USPS forwarding does not replace agency-specific updates.

IRS

The IRS accepts an address change through a filed tax return, Form 8822 for individuals, Form 8822-B for businesses, or a signed written statement containing the required identifying information. The agency notes that processing can take four to six weeks. Some government checks may not be forwarded, so update the IRS directly rather than relying only on USPS.

California DMV

California residents generally need to notify the DMV within 10 days of moving. The online system can update a driver’s license or ID address, a vehicle or vessel address, or both. A change does not automatically issue a replacement card or registration document. Follow the current steps on the California DMV change-of-address page.

Voter Registration and Other Records

Update voter registration when your move changes your voting address. Also review Social Security, immigration, professional-license, court, or public-benefit records if any apply to you. Requirements vary, so use the agency’s official website.

On Moving Week

Keep confirmation emails or screenshots for completed updates. Check the apartment or unit number, ZIP code, and mailing format before submitting each change.

Update or confirm:

  • Mobile phone billing and emergency-contact details
  • Online retailers and saved checkout addresses
  • Meal, grocery, pet-food, and pharmacy deliveries
  • Clubs, gyms, charities, and membership organizations
  • Newspaper, magazine, and product subscriptions
  • Friends and relatives who send physical mail

Remove the old address from default delivery profiles when it is no longer needed. Leaving it saved can lead to an accidental shipment months later.

After You Arrive

Watch both forwarded mail and account notices for at least several weeks. Every correctly forwarded envelope identifies another sender to update directly. Confirm that your name appears on the mailbox or building directory if the property requires it.

Also check packages that were ordered before the move. Carriers and retailers may not use the same forwarding process as letter mail.

Review your next bank statement, insurance notice, pay stub, and medical correspondence. Check that billing and residential addresses are correct, since some accounts store them separately. For a business, update invoices, tax registrations, licensing records, vendors, customers, website contact details, and map listings through the appropriate owner.

Addresses to Keep Private or Handle Carefully

Do not post your new address publicly as a general announcement. Share it directly with people and organizations that need it. For accounts protected by identity checks, expect the provider to request verification.

If personal safety is a concern, ordinary forwarding may not be the right approach. Review address-confidentiality resources in your state before submitting a public-facing change.

Confirm the Updates After Your Move

Address changes are easier when they share a timeline with packing, access reservations, and utility setup. Mark each update complete and record the confirmation. If you also need help with packing, loading, or the move itself, review Comfy Moving’s full-service moving options and request a quote based on your dates and addresses.
